A swashbuckling left back, famed for his surging runs down the flank and venomous left foot, John Arne Riise is also a fine defender and can often be used as a barometer for Liverpool's form: when the Norwegian is playing well, Liverpool are playing well. Signed from Norwegian league football as a 17-year old by French side Monaco in 1998, John Arne Riise helped them to French league glory in 2000 before his form persuaded Liverpool to sign the youngster for £4.6m in the summer of 2001. He settled in quickly and has been an important player for Liverpool ever since. Played to varying effect on the left of midfield by Gerard Houllier, especially in 2003/4, Rafael Benitez in his first season in charge (2004/5) returned him to left-back - where his habit of joining attacks from deep has greatest effect - and he returned to his influential best, setting up the Gerrard goal that got them back into the Champions League final of 2005, which they won against AC Milan 3-2 on penalties. Also a regular in the Norwegian national team, John Arne Riise appeared 47 times for Liverpool in the 2005/6 season in all competitions.

Like Hallvar Thoresen before him, John Arne Riise left Norway at the tender age of 17 to try his luck as a footballer, and became a star. He was already a regular for Norway's U18 team, and despite his young age, he had already played more than 20 first-team games for first division side Aalesund when he joined Monaco in the summer of 1998. Nevertheless, many experts warned him about leaving Norway so soon, fearing he was too young and that he would rot in the reserves like so many other youngsters who had ventured overseas. Towards the end of the 2000/01 season, Riise was back in favour at Monaco, and he became a target for several English clubs. In the summer of 2001, it looked as if Riise was about to join his old manager Jean Tigana at Fulham. A fee had been agreed, and Riise had reportedly agreed personal terms. But in the last minute, Liverpool made a bid for the player, and Riise then made a U-turn and joined the Merseyside giants instead.

John Arne Riise is renowned for the venemous shooting power and accuracy of his favoured left foot aswell as his excellent physical conditioning, most notably his outstanding stamina levels. evealed that Riise had sent numerous SMS to different Norwegian celebrity women with the exact same text (translated from Norwegian): "Good evening... After a lot of calling to all kinds of contacts, I finally got your number. I have always thought you are very charming, cute, sexy, fantastic aura, and last but not least, you seem exciting and challenging;) hope we can get in touch, and I will of course invite you on a romantic dinner for two;) kiss from John Arne Riise xxx". John Arne Riise has later stated that he doesn't want to discuss any issues but football with the press and that he's going to boycott the Norwegian tabloids VG and Dagbladet. The text was later parodized in the comic strip M in a way that could be seen as a friendly stab at Frode Øverli and Pondus (both of which are avid Liverpool-supporters). This caused the two comics to make strips about each other for some time. In February 2007 it was reported that John Arne Riise was attacked by team mate Craig Bellamy with a golf club during a team training session in Portugal, after Riise allegedly refused to sing Karaoke with Bellamy. Both players were fined two weeks pay by the team, and manager Rafael Benitez accepted the players' apology. In the first match following the incident, away at Barcelona, Bellamy scored an equalizer before the half time whistle, celebrating by emulating a golf stroke. In an ironic twist of fate, Bellamy set up the winner in that match, assisting none other than John Arne Riise. During 2004-05, John Arne Riise's achievements include scoring a vital first goal against Charlton Athletic at Anfield, an impressive brace against West Bromwich Albion away, and the fastest goal ever in League Cup final, after just forty-five seconds, with a fantastic volley against Chelsea.
